Grade 6 Students Explore the Science of Flight

Students in Mrs. Michalik’s Grade 6 technology classes recently took to the skies with an exciting paper airplane challenge—one that went far beyond simple paper folding. Young engineers explored the four forces of flight—lift, weight, thrust, and drag—while following the engineering design process to prototype, test, and refine their airplanes.

Each team designed, tested, and redesigned their flyers with an added twist: every plane had to carry a paperclip and a one-foot length of string. After multiple trials, the classes came together for a friendly competition. Out of all three Grade 6 technology classes, the longest flight soared an impressive 53 feet!

This hands-on experience provided the perfect takeoff for our next big mission—applying these same aerodynamic principles to design and launch 3D-printed rockets. We love watching our students’ curiosity soar as they turn complex classroom concepts into high-flying reality! ✈️🚀
